Cricket Green aims to encourage pupils to reach their potential. Students are encouraged to develop their independence skills and prepare themselves for working life whatever their level of need.. As part of this ethos, when the pupils reach Key Stages 4 and 5 (Years 10 - 14) they have the opportunity to go on work experience.
The aim of the work experience placements is to provide pupils with an idea of what working life can be like. The placements are tailored to the needs of each pupil so that they have the very best chance to succeed.
The pupils can be offered work placements which represent many different areas of working life and these have included locksmiths, dog parlours, mechanics, cafes and charity shops. The students attend an interview with their employer and are provided with a set of expectations regarding their attitude and behaviour in addition to their working hours and dress code. During their work experience the pupils are expected to keep a diary of their activities so that they can report back to their peers when they return to school. All the students are visited by a member of staff at their placement.
For those students that are not yet ready to go out into the community the school provides “in school” work experience. These students visit different work places in the community including Sainsbury’s where they have the opportunity to use the tills and find items around the store. Other visits include Deen City Farm, Merton Libraries and the St Raphael’s charity shop. The students also ‘work’ in school.
The pupils are fully supported during this time to ensure that they get the most out of their experience. If required staff can take pupils to and from their placements and we work closely with the school transport services to ensure that all pupils are able to travel safely.
